Watermelons are a fleshy fruit, that are members of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family – alongside pumpkins and cucumbers! When ripe, the sweet juicy pulp is a delicious, refreshing treat. Sunshine and heat help the ripening process of watermelon, so you can expect them to be most delicious during the warmer months. While they’re great by themselves, simply sliced and devoured, you could also try freezing and blending melon into refreshing beverages, or using it in salads with mint and a salty cheese like halloumi or fetta.
Watermelons are over 90% water, but are soaked with nutrients. They contain the carotenoid lycopene, phenolic antioxidants, and are a very good source of vitamin C.
Watermelons do not continue to ripen and soften once picked. Whole watermelons can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week, or at room temperature for a week or two. Cut watermelon should be wrapped, refrigerated, and used within 3-5 days.
